In "Condition Black" you'll only do what you have been trained to do - no more, no less. That is why it's a good idea to go over the recommended SOP of a self-defense shooting. Talk it through with your spouse, your kids, and your friends. Write out quick reference cheat sheets for them. Do whatever you can to help you and your family from going into condition black.

As Fathers of small children, it's a real possibility that we might have to draw our firearm while we are in custody of our children. The natural instinct when there is any danger is to shield our children with our bodies but is that the best idea if you are dealing with an armed bad guy? Born in 1920, he fought in the Pacific in World War II and in Korea before retiring as a lieutenant colonel. Cooper went on to earn his master’s degree and taught high school and college classes before he opened American Pistol Institute (API), which is now known as Gunsite, one of the nation’s top training destinations for civilian shooters, law enforcement, and military professionals. Cooper not only changed how shooters used their firearms but more importantly, he taught us that the mental preparedness is just as, if not more important than technical skill – which is the foundation of what we built this show on. As a new gun owner I’ve always thought that the 15+1 rounds in my Glock 19 were sufficient to stop any threat, but doing research for this show has shown me how important it is to carry a spare magazine. Don't be fooled by what you see in the movies, the human body has an amazing ability to suck up damage and just keep on going and if you add that to the fact that most attackers are not alone, then you are setting yourself up for failure if you're not carrying a spare magazine.
